A New Perspective on Same-Sex Marriage

The same sex marriage issue will continue to divide and plague American politics until there’s a fundamental change in perspective on the discussion. This post offers that new perspective.

Same sex marriage is always debated as a discrimination issue. Technically speaking, “discrimination” pertains to the power of making fine distinctions in judgment.” Without the ability to judge if one thing is different from another, humans would never have made it out of the stone age. When it comes to sacred bonds between two individuals, discrimination is appropriate.

On Amazon.com, “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” is described as, “…the most famous relationship book ever published.” Amazon goes on to say, “…this phenomenal book has helped men and women realize how different they can be in their communication styles, their emotional needs, and their modes of behavior.”

If men and women are SO different emotionally and physically, it goes without saying that an intimate relationship between a man and a woman will be profoundly different than an intimate relationship between a man and a man and one between a woman and a woman.

It is because of these profound differences, that discrimination should be applied to each relationship. In other words, each relationship deserves to be formed and celebrated by its own special and sacred institution with its own SPECIAL NAME.

The sacred name given to an intimate relationship between a man and a woman is marriage. An intimate relationship between a man and man, will be characterized by different communication styles, emotional needs, and modes of behavior. The same can be said about intimate woman-woman relationships. Also, because they are so profoundly different than marriage, they deserve their own institutional names. It’s important to note that the names for these male-male and female-female institutions, should not be subsumed by or associated with the institution of marriage. In other words, they should not be called a same-sex-union or a gay marriage or a lesbian marriage. Rather, the community of those who form such relationships deserver and should choose their own sacred, institutional names.

The only aspect of male-female, male-male and female-female relationships that should be the same is the equality of civil rights.

When man-woman, man-man and woman-woman relationships are discussed in this context there is no longer divisiveness based on bigotry. Rather, all relationships are honored for their sanctity, while their civil rights are recognized as equal. If this perspective is considered and adopted, this issue will fade from American politics. With this new perspective, each group can focus on their primary mission, the lifelong commitment to a sacred union between adults who love each other.
